SANDRINGHAM coach Simon McPhee is confident forward Beau Wilkes will get plenty of opportunities at the Saints.
An emergency for tomorrow’s clash against Port Adelaide, Wilkes impresses last week with four goals against Box Hill.
The former Eagle is a mature age recruit and adds a new dimension to the forward line for St Kilda.
He will line up alongside Jackson Coleman and Sam Dunnell for Sandringham against North Ballarat in the VFL tomorrow.
“I’ve obviously a bit to do with Wilkesy in the past. He’s a super competitor and he can really play. It’s just great to see him get some reward for effort and kick a few goals,” McPhee said.
“I’m really pleased with him. He knows what he’s got to do, he’s got to work really hard. It’s a really competitive environment, you get nothing for free. Hopefully at some stage, he’ll get an opportunity.”
Meanwhile, another former Eagle, Adam Cockie is already impressing in the VFL since crossing from the WAFL.
Cockie collected 26 disposals in his first VFL outing for the Zebras last week.
“I’ve known of Adam for quite a few years and coached against him back in Perth. He’s just a hard player, his inside work is great. He’s a great tackler. He’s been a great asset to our footy club,” McPhee said.
Cockie admits the smaller grounds, particularly the Zebras home at Trevor Barker Beach Oval suits his game style as an inside midfielder.
“I find it’s a smaller ground compared to the WAFL so there’s a lot more contested footy which kind of works to my strengths as an inside midfielder,” Cockie said.
